Standard Eastern White Pine
Lightweight, soft, even textured and easily worked, Eastern White Pine is the least resinous of all pines. It does not swell or shrink greatly with moisture content changes and displays remarkable durability. Standard Grade (taken from the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association Handbook) The picture to the left represents full spectrum of Standard Grade. This general utility grade is serviceable for not only construction and industrial purposes, but also for the popular rustic decor. The grade determination is made from the better face which proudly displays a preponderance of knots. Red knots are allowable up to 2/3 the width of the board to a maximum of 6". Black knots are limited to 1/2 the width of the board to a maximum of 4". Knot holes cannot exceed 1/4 the board width to a maximum of 2" and a frequency not to exceed one maximum size hole per 8 linear feet or equivalent. Characteristics which add to the rustic flavor of Standard are the pitch, pith, pockets, stain, wane, warp and worm holes which can be present in fairly heavy amounts. Shake can be through the board, but cannot exceed 1/3 the length, whereas unsound wood either incipient 33 1/3% of surface area, or advance 10% of surface area (or equivalent combination thereof) with only 10% being allowed on the grade face, and must not destroy the nailing edge. Splits may approach twice the width of the board, but cannot exceed 1/6 the length of the board (edge cracks and breaks are limited to 1/3 the width) while checks can be 1/4 the length of the board (not to exceed 3’). Seams are included in the grade so long as they do not seriously weaken the board or exceed 1/6 the length and skips on the reverse face or one edge are limited to 20% of the pieces.
