Teak

Characteristics: True Teak of Burma is an exotic and imported hardwood that is a uniform golden-brown color. Teak is generally straight to wavy grained, coarse textured and oily to the touch. The luster is dull. The wood has a distinctive smell. Teak has excellent strength properties which make the timber so suitable for structural uses. Teak has outstanding durability in regards to wet and dry conditions. It is hard, strong, heavy and very attractive.

Common Uses: Teak is best for ship building - decking - furniture - paneling - acid vats - carvings - turnery - joinery - veneer - plywood and any exterior projects.

Working Properties: Teak works well although it is hard on tools. Thin, sharp cutting edges are the key. Worked edges remain sharp. It takes screws and nails easily. The wood can be oil finished. Gluing is good on freshly planed or sanded surfaces.
